Worth Waiting For A New Lemur?

i know there are absolutely no new plans for a new lemur, but do you think cycling '74's partnership with ableton will mean a new version being made specificly for live? i just don't want to go and buy one and have it be made redunant by a new model. is this just crazy talk or is there a chance it could happen?

seems like a lemur designed specifically for live would suck actually...

the current one seems to kick all sorts of butt. and even if something new comes out it's still going to kick alot of butt, just cause it'll become outdated doesn't mean it's not going to be as awesome tomorrow as it is today ya know?

oh yer. there's no doubt that the lemur is quite simply insane, but things have to move forward sometime. until the device is made that takes sound straight out of my head and plays it through speakers in a matter of moments i won't be happy. looks like i've got a very lonely life ahead!

but music coming out of your head would take all the skill out of it, what would be the point anymore if all you have to do is think?

music, since the beginning of time, is nothing more than a person DO'ing something that is audible.

fair point, but everything movement a musician makes is based on the initial sound he wants to create. all arm, leg, hand, finger, etc movement patterns are secondary to the thoughts in his head - music. won't it be great to not have to worry that you didn't press a button at the right time or turn a switch at a certain point? it would be purely down to your imagination. i honestly fell that something is lost in getting a sound from your head, onto a computer (or otherwise) and out the speakers. it's not a perfect transistion, but very human. i like to thing that music isn't something that the earth created but more cottoned on to, and in that sense will never perfect.

Now, back on topic...

Cycling 74 is merely a distributor of the Lemur, so I doubt this partnership with Ableton will have any direct impact on the development of the Lemur.

There are a few templates made for Live, but the whole point of the Lemur is modularity and customization. No reason to produce a Live-lemur.

I think you'll be safe with the current one. On the other hand if you'd like something that works out of the box, you should wait and get the official statement on the Dexter which is Jazzmutant's latest contraption.

That's the whole point of the Lemur. Customize it the way you want.

A pre-configured solution would defeat the whole purpose!

A refined design (thinner/lighter) for half the price would get me considering it. Here's to Dexter being that design (highly unlikley I know).

Too True... I'm lucky enough to have a Lemur, and having an interface that is pre-concievced to work with a specific DAW would defeat the whole idea of having one. You might as well buy a normal hardware MIDI controller.

On the other point, Cycling 74 may distribute the Lemur, but it just so happens that it works brilliantly with Max/MSP, and not just Live like many people assume. In my humble opinion, the partnership between the Abes & Cycling 74 can only play to it's strengths...

I think anyone planning to buy a Lemur soon should wait a month or two until Jazzmutant recovers from the Dexter situation. It's all they can handle right now, and the Lemur and its user community are getting zero attention.

They plan to release it in a couple of months, and by then they will probably clarify their future plans for Lemur development.

i predict that there will be a portable computer to come onto the market VERY SOON.. as in within a years time.. that will make the lemur obsolete (or fall RAPIDLY in price).. yes. a 15" widescreen multi-touch tablet PC of sorts... it is coming. then all you need to do is build your own graphical user interfaces with max or reaktor.. and viola.

or hasn't HP already put out a multitouch desktop machine recently?.... the future is coming O___O

That might very well be so - but I can't see how this will make the Lemur obsolete. There's a point in having the controller UI containing only what you need to control - not the entire program's UI.

Also - even if you have a multi touch LCD on your lappy - the pans or clip buttons in Live for example would not suffice to control with your finger tips. They're definitely too small (even for my girly fingers) at 1680x1050.

you have a point. controlling live as-is on screen would be a slight cumbersome, depending on the quality/resolution/sensitivity of the touchscreen itself (did you see the iphone demo at macworld? that sucker is SENSITIVE.).. but as soon as multitouch laptops become popular in the musician and artist world there will soooooon follow the right (lemur-like) software applications to take advantage of this. promise. the first of which will be homebrew max/msp, bidule, and reaktor apps.. which might suit a lot of people for a long time. you might even be able to build something to control live a little bit more easily on your own?...

I agree with this for anyone thinking about buying a NEW lemur. I think its a good idea to buy a used lemur if you find one is available. Also, I think anyone who is thinking about selling their lemur should sell now....before anything comes to light between now and dexter shipping, which may reduce the second-hand value.

I dont think lemur users have anything to worry about, I cant wait to get on board.
