Hi,

I'm experiencing problems when running Ableton Live (latest version) as ReWire slave to Logic (latest version). Live gives me the error msg "problem with host application" and then Logic quits and Live freezes.

System: G5 2x2 GHz, Mac OS 10.3.2, RME Multiface PCI.

I did everything right; opening Logic first, creating two audio objects and set them to "RW:Mix L" and "RW:Mix R". Then I opened Live and the problems started.

Questions:

Are people successfully slaving other ReWire applications to Logic, like for example Reason?

Is someone, somewhere, running Live ReWired under Logic on a G5?

I need to know to plan a darbouka player session coming up on Jan 4. I would live to record the guy in Live, feeding him loops of his drumming. If I can't sort out the ReWire problem with Logic I will have to record him in Logic and use an external loop sampler (Repeater) for the real-time loop feedback.

I had the same problem...
I reaad that one needs to play & stop Logic first before starting Live to really engage the Rewire engine.
Did that but still had the problem & error message...
Then I started play in Logic and kept it running when I started up Live.
That worked for me.

I didn't use the setup very much but I imagine you'll be better off recording the drummer jammin continuously in Logic while triggering loops in Live... Plus, you might not have a choice while running Live in slave mode since the i/o is all Rewire based.

Thanks a lot for your advice! Can't say how happy I am that I finally got these app's to speak to each other.

The ReWire slaving of Live is only intended for the arranging and mixing, later on. On this first session I'm just going to record the darbouka player. First in Live, to allow him to build a couple of "drumming orchestras" over eight to ten tracks. Loop lengths one to eight bars. I'm planning different sessions in 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 and 7/8 time measure. Then finally, if we have time for it, I'll also record him in Logic on complete takes of three to four minute tracks, while ReWire-ing Live with the "drumming orchestras" as his backing track. Then the drummer is off to Italy.

Some spoken word is hopefully coming in from US on a CDR and I will also be adding melody instruments (sax, guitar, harmonica) played live while mangled and "live looped" through an Echoplex. At this phase I will be recording in Logic run as midi clock slave to the clock master Echoplex. The darbouka orchestra beats will be brought back for the arranging/mixing phase by Live ReWired to Logic. Live will now be mangling the darbouka beats to the tempi (and also some tempo changes) in Logic, originally recorded by midi clock from the Echoplex performance. The mixes will end up on a CD released by a company that is sponsoring on a minimal budget but with great enthusiasm and good intentions

Hmmm, you may have to be careful when the same drum sounds from logic and from live - live seems to have quite a sonical impact on the sound! when I tried to load the same sounds (which are running in live) into HALion or Kontakt to be able to support live featurs by that of my sampler there was quite a great difference in sound. So I exported the sounds from Live and loaded them into the sampler.

I agree that some sound tend to give a more rough impact when played back by Live, compared to that same file played back by Logic. But that is one thing I like with Live.

But I have never before made serious recordings in Live, only Logic, so I will definitely take an initial pilot test to see if it will work. The only thing I can think of as a possible problem is if the attack of the first drum beat gets cut out because the drummer is playing a bit ahead. Whith Logic I always start recording one bar before "the loop" begins and then I'll treat the track with eq and compression and bounce it down longer than I want the final loop. Then I import it back into Logic, cut the audio region exactly by the planned loop length and TRIM it (destructively cutting away audio outside the loop). Then it will have exactly the right loop lengths and play back fine in Live.
