FWsolo through LaCie Porsche

a technical question
I am wondering if I can connect my FireWire Solo M-Audio with FWcable into my external firewire HD (LaCie Porsche) and the connect that to my portable G4Mac?
y'see I am running out of diskspace and want to be able to use the external HD to store files
and when I want to work with them I drag them into my G4. This means I will not be working with the files when they are on the ext. HD. I just want my applications and the file I am working on for the moment to be on my G4.
I am worried:
(a) if it is possible to do so
and
(b) the latency when there's the ext. HD between the G4 and the FWsolo?
