is there anyway to make ableton interface like an old 606 ..
i really like the simplicity of the 606 interface but would love to be able use abelton + samples to set it up..
any clues / pointers how i would start?

I think the Impulse instrument would do what you want. Just load it with 606 samples and away you go. Creating the pattern is sort of like programing a TR-x0x drum machine.

im pretty sure you could just use something like a korg ER-1 midi'd up to ableton.
i have one and its great. i use it as a drum machine though. I got mine a couple of years ago for $100.

but in abelton itself? using the keyboard as on/off switches for each beat?

yes, it's very possible. You would need to assign a ton of buttons, though, even for simple 16x4 sequences.
Trust me, if you think this will be "simple" then you're looking in the wrong direction. Almost any midi application can be done with Live and different tricks, but a lot of times the effort put into it just won't be worth it.
I believe this is one of those times.
I would look towards a simple plugin step sequencer, like "my first step sequencer" and then duplicate that for as many drum sounds you want, and then somehow route midi to the different instances.
Or just go all out and get Reaktor or something. It'll probably be worth it in the long run. Who knows?

I forgot about my first step sequencer! this would be perfect for what he's after.

Once Live 7 is out and we can work with MAX/MSP 'objects' or whatever (safe guess), will a step sequencer be easy to code? Seems like a slicer (minus peak/dynamics detection) could also be easy to code. Easy being a relative term.

you honostly think that the cycling ableton pairing is going to mean we get max devices in live? somehow I really really doubt it.

I don't know Max. If Cycling 74 licensed their core playback/data crunching (not compiling, creating, development tools) to Live then I could see Live ingesting and playing data according to Max modules (whatever they're called, whatever they are.)
That way Cycling 74 gets hype for their development tools like MAX/MSP/Jitter and their Pluggo type FX bundles they sell for a few hundred $$. Live also gets open ended mad functionality, users can make the stuff we want, Ableton won't have to.
I don't know Reaktor either but you can use it as a VST within Live and use Reaktor patches, same thing with Max? Use it as a VST to open Max modules?
Dunno, my optimisitc $0.02.

isn't pluggo basically the max vst you're talking about?
though I'd like to see pluggo's be able to send midi in live, which it's supposed to be able to do but can't.

You're right, Pluggos are VSTs.
Like you suggested, having audio/midi going into MAX objects and back into Live, maybe that's it. I should check the original "wtf is with the Cycling 74 partnership?"

if they fix the lack of midi from pluggo's then I think we'd be totally set. thats all I'm hoping for is live to better impliment pluggo's
but then.. my pluggo's don't even work right these days. I've got like 50 pluggo's all of which used to work and now like 6 work, the others won't even show up. but thats besides the point...
sorry to highjack the thread.

damn hijackers..thats ok..
machinate I found I had downloaded your machinate step sequence 4 , that has given me a starting point so thanks.
I will see how I go or I might see if my doepfer synch to midi box I ordered ages ago ever shows up and will use my 606 with live as is.
thanks for your help and the insightful digressions
