I seem to spend most of my time remixing my own tracks, and then remixing the remixes (and so on) to end up with something that sounds more interesting to me, and often ends up in a completely different place from where it first started. Every now and then I have to sit back and look at what I'm doing and ask myself "is this really music producing?"

I'm talking about music like sebastiAn and Justice, and it's all over compressed to the point that certain sounds push other sounds out of the mix, it's over distorted and cut up to hell, and probably breaking all the rules in engineering but the strange thing is I really like it. Mostly because it sounds really fresh to me, but I feel less of a musician making it! It's got to the point where I don't like hearing a part or sample played normally, I like to hear it cut up and all wrong!This isn't normal is it?

Does anyone else feel like this?

dogmatic engineers are bad artists (and boring people). keep on experimenting and catch foreign soul, so what the fuck .

Thank you very much for starting this thread. You just reminded me what I liked about music when I was kid. And now, rather than maturing, I just don't like most music. Attitude readjustment in full-effect. In fine art experimentation and mistakes are left open to be judged at the critical point of first evaluation. I like the striking contrast of a new idea in an old format. Mixers/masteres provide a service, but they are also artists themselves.

Never be surprised poorly when you get a haircut from the inexpensive barber school. Especially if you are the barber. Never get it cut if you are trying to grow it out.

Since it was brought up about getting older and not liking music as much anymore, it just made me realize something. When most people say they don't like the music coming out today or what these damn kids are listening to they are mostly talking about what is being played on commercial radio. 10 or so years ago that would be your only music listening outlet. This is why most people hitting their upper 30's and early 40's are stuck still listening to Van Halen and thinking that is as good as it gets…a little slow to embrace the Internet beyond Internet and porn, present company excluded.

But isn't it great that we now live in a time when you can hate commercial radio but not be stuck in a time glitch from your past? You can still keep current, hear great new music, and it's all thanks to the Interweb machine. That rocks!, er, I mean is tasty! So quit feeling old and dated.

Some of the most potent ideas I have feel like cheating...that's what makes them so good, in a way...suddenly a door opens, and everything looks real easy...I think that's called jumping to the next level, maybe? Producing doesn't have to always be hard work....some would say having fun is the entire point!

YES! I've been noticing a problem I experience all the time is thinking that what I just did was too easy and therefor wasn't good enough. I used to layer 16 tracks in ableton with a dozen plugins each and my cpu would go through the roof, but I'm starting to realise more and more you can easily do a song with 3 or 4 tracks, basic drum track, bass, melody, noises format. I often find myself thinking "I can't just throw a squarewave synth on there and call it a day, thats just too easy" but the fact of the matter is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with easy.

EDIT: Sometimes I run my mouth.
