Irony ::M-Audio FW1814 Problem:: Laptop won't recognise HELP

Followed all the instructions installed drivers etc. The shutdown and connected sound card. Re-booted laptop and it won't recognize the FW1814 no matter. Tried shutting down and restarting, changing firewire ports, different drivers.

I'm running OSX PPC 10.4.9 Bus Powered (it is getting power cause the light is on)

Any ideas?? Help Please??

Try external power anyway. PC user here but I've read stuff about Mac port power not always cutting it.

Tried it on my GF's PC laptop and still no luck. It's receiving power. I also used external power on the PC Laptop as I used the 4 pin connection.

I'm really lost as to what to do?? Any ideas??

Return it and get a real audio interface like the Ultralite.

Kidding, but only a little.

Do a search on your hard drive for "m audio" and anything that has to do with that. Then delete all of it. Reboot, and reinstall the drivers. That worked for me. But eventually I got so tired of that piece of junk randomly disconnecting and unloading the drivers that I sold it.

Yeah, I was going to say "it's not irony, it's m-audio"

But it's good advice, delete all the drivers - if I remember correctly, M-Audio driver installers also include an uninstaller. Try that, restart, re-install.

If it still doesn't work, try creating a new user account with no login items and extentions. If it works with that, then you can figure out if there is a conflict. Only have one user account active at a time (log out the other user) - I've had problems with with firewire with two accountn running sometimes

Or as 'the planet' suggested, save yourself the headaches and buy an ultralite.

Hi, I had this problem if I remember right. I did a full uninstall, removing every bit of m-audio everything. reinstalled, carefully to make sure that things were done in the right order (like they were the first time) and it seemed to work. Good luck. FWIK the PPC drivers are trickier than the intels on macs, though it may be my experience and suspicion.

Have you tried a different firewire cable? I had a problem once with another piece of FW kit and it was simply a faulty cable...

You might want to try it in the second firewire port in case the one is busted. Whatever you do, don't hot-swap maudio products. The are cheap, and fragile, and might harm your computer.

If you have already done this, you may have to reset some stuff in your computer. I remember reading about this vaguely.

I have already alternated firewire ports and also check them to make sure the ones on the computers are operable. I will try the macbook pro today and if that won't work it's out the door. Disappointing really, getting new gear and not even seeing it work once....

Have you tried calling tech support? I know it's probably not under warranty but I would try it.

it's under warranty but Australian tech support are shit! He basically tried telling me that the problem was pretty much me. Nothing useful at all. I think the guy I spoke to was probably having trouble just keeping his head on his shoulders

when I check under system profiler it come up as;

Unknown Device:

Manufacturer: Unknown
Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec

when the 1814 is connected and nothing when it is not. Really weird cause I have tried so many driver combos and the latest even more,

The first tech I got was an absolute dumbass. The second one walked me through unistalling everything through the terminal, reinstalling, and finally getting everything to work.

I had to call back a a week later. I would try just calling right back. I was pissed I didn't. Or at least a day later. Get someone who wants to work for a living.
