Live in real-time?

hello,
does anyone know if it´s possible to play ableton in a real live situation...
i mean, dragging files and vst effects or ableton effects in an empty set in real time without clipping?
I tried to do it, but it´s a disaster: every time i transport a file, or an effect, or even move a track, it´s that horrible clipping...
can someone help me?
I mean, i need sometimes to do this when i play music, you know, for example, you play with someone else, you hear a sound and you think: oh, that sound reminds my sample with my effect and so on.
But then is the clipping...
ok.
thanks a lot.

do it all the time and it works fine for me. maybe try running with a little more latency on your soundcard - this'll give your machine more of a chance at keeping up with what you're doing.

hmm I'd go about it a bit differently then you're thinking.. if you're thinking about pretty much improvising in ableton I'd drag on say five of your favourite vst synths or other instruments and a couple of drum machines... this way you could move back and fourth between the drum machines and switch different synths.... also make use of abletons cue function and headphones on an extra output to prelisten to your work....

I play solo with one file only.
I make 5 minutes between (some playback) the songs and start each one by a pedal board that also start loops for endless solos. With program change I change the fx for guitar, voice, and all keyboards.
Trouble only with the continuous controller....

Well, maybe it´s a problem of ram or something like that...
i have 512 mb of ram and use an external hard drive, the cpu seems ok, but it always clip.
I tried to fix windows, deleting everything i don´t need, i don´t use internet...well, that´s it.
Maybe someone knows the exact technical things to do, i don´t...
Thanks

maybe what you have to change is the buffer or your audio card, lower buffers, bertter response. External USB drives can be probematic...
