drop outs with only 1 audio channel & 1 vst

For my live set I'm Running two 60 min audio tracks in the arrangement view on two tracks. Along the way I play various soft synths live (Battery 3, Absynth 4 & FM
over the top. In total there are 27 midi tracks with zero midi clips.
As I go through the set only switch on the VST's i need at that time using the switch on the Device Title Bar. At most there would be two vst's switched on.
I am experiencing dropouts even when there is only one audio track playing & 1 VST switched on. The CPU meter will shoot up to 127% even when the vst isn't been played and just the audio is running. Is this because of all the midi channels open but not in use?
here's what i'm using
Live 6.0.7
MacBook Pro / 2.33GHz / 2 GB Ram / OSX 10.4.8
M-Audio Firewire Audiophile
Buffer Size 870
External 7200 RPM hard drive for audio files
