Mp3 : what 's the point ?

I just wonder :
WHY is there a mp3 support in Live if all mp3 are decoded & stored in cache as WAVE file ? (using lots more megabytes than mp3s)
Look at : (PC)
c:\Documents and Settings\your_account_name\Application Data\Ableton\Live Recordings\Decoding Cache
It seems pretty stupid to have two copies of the same file ...

It's just so you can play them.
It does not mean that EVERY mp3 on your system is going to get a permanent .wav file, unless you want it to. You control the size of the cache.

And, after a bit of time, they will be deleted.
Look at it like this:
I have a lot of songs. I don't use all of them all the time. I also want to be able to get as much on my iPod as I can. Therefore, mp3's are great. When I need to, I let LIVE do all the decoding when I create a set with these songs. If you think about it, it actually makes quite a bit of sense. Rather than have all files as wavs that take up a lot of space.
Before you say anything about sound quality, I use LAME to encode everything VBR. There may be some slight diminution of sound quality, but I don't believe enough to warrant having everything as a wav. I coudl be wrong though.
