If I get a USB microphone, can I plug it into Ableton?
I want to play my instrument through the mic to add effects to the instrument and maybe record other sounds.

Would that work?

SHOULD work. i don't own and haven't used a USB mic, but i ASSUME it will appear as an "audio inout device" in the dropdown menu in the Audio tab of the Live preferences window...

SHOULD.

what instrument?
do you have a sound card?
what computer do you use?
Have you ever recorded anything before?

if you want to do some recording of your sax,
the USB mic will probably work well for you.

you will hear a latency when monitoring through your cheap sound card

what is your goal, budget?

are you recording a band?
are you recording sax lines, to transcribe at a later time?
will you be adding to the production after the recording?
are you recording your sax into your ableton productions?
will you be sharing the data with anyone else?

Oh. I want to buy something for REAL cheap on ebay hopefully.
I'm not recording a band.

I'm not going to edit after because I want to use it while playing live.

i am really trying to help you, but when I as you for information you refuse to give it to me.

Do you usually take your laptop to gigs?

What is your budget? real cheap does not help me to help you.

something like this would probably be the easiest. just record at gig and come home and upload to computer.

no need to take expensive lappy to the gig

Sorry. I didn't mean to not give you information.
So you can see what I mean, check this video out. I would like to try to do stuff like what these guys are doing. When I said real cheap, I meant I'd like to buy a microphone for less than $100. Yes, I'd take a laptop to gigs.

very interesting.

you will need a pro level sound card and a good mic, and preamp

since you are on a PC, I can advise no further because I know Apple only.

Well.

In your opinion, what would be the cheapest way to get my saxophone into Ableton.

Thanks

dude don't listen to that, you can get a cheap sound card that works very very well on latency, I use a creative sound blaster 24 bit usb running at 24 bit audio at 96000 khz with a 6ms delay... I play live drum pads so it's critical to have a low delay...

I got the sound card for 40 bucks... all u need is a decent mic but if you're just starting to play arround with this get a cheap mic but get one that is created for using with horns...

anyways improv kicks ass and I support your idea, get a hold of me because I mess arround with improv a lot and I have learned a lot of new techniques with live and how it can be achieved...
