Hey all

So I have just upgraded to 6 for my new vista laptop(centrino 1.6 dual-1gb ram) and it runs great except....
.. I get alot of recording audio latency with DX drivers so I'm using the newest asio4all -which I've always used in acid and live - and when I record audio(guita or bass) all tracks being played back and the metronome if I'm using it are being recorded on the incoming audio track . Ive searched high and low and cant find any setting to change it. If I arm one audio track and let it record it will record the metronome when I turn it off and on
It doesnt happen with the DX(realtek HD) drivers but I just cant get rid of the latency with those .
Any help would be great

ASIO4ALL is not always going to help, it's a generic driver and doesn't always fit well with every card. See if Realtek have ASIO drivers and if so, install those but probably the best advice I can give you is what you already know but don;t want to hear. Buy a proper audio interface, either cardbus or USB is better for modern PCs because they usually have balls firewire chipsets, especially newer laptops.

The Echo Indigo IO/ Echo Indigo DJ are great pcmcia cards, you can get cardbus interfaces for EMU and RME products (although quite a bit pricier) or something like the EMU 0404 USB interface which has received several excellent write ups.

Realtek and Sigmatel cards are cheapy onboard audio solutions designed to be cost effective and enable the windows sounds and maybe play back mp3s and games to an average degree, they are not designed for working with pro audio programs such as Live. Even if you got away with using poor onboard audio with Acid and live on other machines in the past thanks to asio4all, it was always a limiting and poorish quality solution. Maybe now is the time to move on and give yourself a better quality card, you will notice the difference and be glad you did.

Yeah ive been avoiding the external sound card for a while now ..but Ive always gotten by with asio4all on my desktop .

So you rekon usb is better than firewire for a new laptop ? I wont be doing any multitracking ..just recording guitars,bass ,turntables and vocals seperataly

It sounds like the problem I had. It turned out my sound card was recording from the stereo mix rather than the line in. Have you checked that?

Just got Ableton Live and I needed to uninstall Asio4all in vista in order to switch to asio. (Using Soundblaster X-fi which works fine), otherwise Live would freeze up until I got rid of that driver. Asio4all is still beta for vista so you might want to mention the problem at their forum so they can check it out further for the next update.
