What do you peeps think of this one:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/ho ... 25288.html
I need it to run ableton 6 and i really like that it has the touch screen capacity (allows me to trigger clips using my finger!!!!

)
But do you think it's up to the task. I know that i can upgrade the ram to 2 gig (but would 1 gig do the job? cause it's an extra 700 for the 2 gig of ram),
also the hard drive is set at 5400... does this matter?
also it doesn't have a firewire port (only 3 usb), and i use a few usb midi controllers, will this matter?
Any help would be great, cheers,
Gyro

Seems like a nice lappie...if you can get an Intel Core2Duo, then you'll have the fastest chips out right now. The Athlons are good too, but they use a lot of energy.
Also, a 7200 RPM drive will definitely speed things up, as will upping to 2gb of RAM. If you want your lappie to last you for the next 3 years, with software and OS upgrades (including Vista - which you should wait to install for about 6 months to 1 year) then get it with 2gb of Ram.
Good luck!

Those tend to be unnecessary, but have sufficient bling to attract the nerdy babes:

Hi,
I tested several pc and mac laptop.. when I will change my asus, I will look for a HP Pro laptop (with 2 internal Harddrives (multibay II), like this >>
HP Pro ) or maybe like this >>
Sonica (based on compal Hel 80)
with a pcmcia firewire card..
The 11" / 12" laptop are interesting but I doubt on their reliability/performance.. Someone work with these ?

depends on the drives you get...the main issue is heat and slightly less battery life...but you get significantly higher track count, so if you do any realtime tracking of acoustic recordings, you'll want a faster drive. Hitachi makes some damn good, fast, silent drives

Thanks for the info about the hard drives, recording audio is important to me, so i think a faster 7200 rpm laptop is the go...
Also i went and had a look at the HP, and i was thoroughly dissapointed. Not as powerful as i had hoped, the touch screen functions pretty poorly, and it heats up considerably, which is a real concern.
It still does look nice, but totally not interested in buying it.
Back to the drawing board... if anyone can suggest any tablets they've looked at i'd be much gratious... thanks

I reccommend the
Macbook,
Macbook Pro,
and the Mac Pro.
Any other machine would be useless and totally inadequate for your needs

That's pretty similar to the one I got
HP pavillion dv2308TX
it's nice - 1gb ram, 120GB HD, Nice DVD-R that even does that Lightscribe thing
nice and portable too with a decent battery of a couple of hours on basic stuff
the only 2 things that shit me - quite a bit actually - are the blue lights that are always on and the fact that the headphone jack is at the front making it a total pain in the arse for using headphones and using it as a laptop
yet the size is totally aimed at being a "laptop"

and for me personally I'd prefer the 120GB @5400 than the 60GB @ 7200 I used to have
but the most acoustic recordings I ever do are guitar and vocals

Yeah my Athlon is great, but my electricity bill is not. However more energy efficient cpu's for Athlons are becoming the norm now.
