Why can i only record into a single channel of live (5) at any one time? Is the app actually that limited? Surely not. This has always bugged me about Live but now I really want to be able to lay down multitrack mixes in real time, be able to fiddle with/replay individual tracks later.

There must be a way, what's the point in having a multiple input sound card if you can only record one input at a time?

get logic or cubase or something.


People spend sooooo much time trying to Convince themselves (and me) that Live is a proper DAW.

And I don’t think it should be either, it’s a fantastic compositional and performance tool.

I wasn't aware you couldn't multi-track in it but there you go. Never tried.
you can't change Key sigs mid arrangement and it doesn't support GM out of the box either.

I don't know if you are a mac or pc user but it's ridiculously simple to simultaneously record as many tracks as your CPU/ram will allow in LIVE. Live is a PERFECTLY acceptable DAW as long as you don't require more than it can offer. For a novice like myself it's all I currently need because I am currently focusing on improvisational recording.

You can multitrack. Just Ctrl+Click on the Record Arm buttons on the tracks, make sure you have the inputs going to tracks you want... and you're good to go.

Hold down the control or apple key, to arm multiple tracks. Or make sure "Arm" is not set to exclusive in your preferences.

I think 99.9% of people here know how to record multiple tracks.

Live is a proper DAW, the problem lies elsewhere.

mac user. I had tried ctrl click, shift click (which is the standard multiple select tool for macs) fuck knows why i never thought of trying apple click.

I knew there would be a simple solution. You dont pay out for an app. which claims to be able to record full band sessions without having the facility for multitrack.

guess now 100% of the people here know how to do it.

I use live for performance.

not taking any sides, here, but from my experience, I record rock bands all the time...just hold down CTRL and click as many record buttons as I need, and then record away to my heart's content. I routinely mix 50-60 track songs, with real drums, bass, guitars, etc.

these days, I'm not even sure what the definition of a DAW is...all I know is I can get entire, complex, multi-track recordings, productions, remixes, and performances, all in Live, and I can do it easier, quicker, and with more creativity in Live than in Logic/Cubase/Sonar.

Can't you also disable the single-record-track function in the Preferences,
thus enabling you to just click as many tracks as you like and save wear and tear on your Cntrl key?

Yup, absolutely. In fact, this is how my prefs are set...no single record, and no single solo.
