Latency - Just when trying to record

Hello,
I've recently purchased a new computer. HP m7750n which come with an Integrated High Definition Audio card from Realtek. From website, spec's are: ALC888 chipset, supports up to 8 audio channels.
I've installed my copy of Ableton Live 5.2 on the computer which is running Vista. Everything works fine until I try to record a guitar or vocals to an Audio track. I can practice all I want and everything is fine, as soon as I enable recording by hitting the record button on the track I get latency.
I've tried the wizard that comes with the Help but it does not solve my problem. Live 5.2 used to work perfectly on my old computer but not without latency on the new one. The soundcard does not use ASIO, just the Direct MMX or whatever. I reduce the output and input buffers like the help file says but it doesn't solve the problem.
My set-up is very basic but it has always worked no problems in the past. I have an analog four-track that I plug a mic or guitar into as mixer and that is plugged into the Line In jack on the back of the computer. I've had no problems with this set-up before, on the old computer I had a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard.
I don't know what I am missing here. I just want to be able to record guitar and vocals into Live 5.2 but it's impossible with the latency/echo messing up the timing.
Again, I can practice and play along with any loops I want but as soon as I enable record there is the latency/echo.
I have tried using Live 6 Demo as ableton support suggested. Same problem.
Please help. Any suggestions?
Thank You
