Set as root never works for my external harddrive

seems ok with my normal laptop hd but when i turn my external harddrive on it never sets my "samples" folder as my root. I can set it as root whilst i start up live, but as soon as i restart it, i need to set it up again.
not really a big deal, just thought id ask.
