I have this track that I can get warped but it's very ambient in the beginning and am having trouble finding the 'first' beat to keep it in time. Everytime I think I have it the claps are off by one beat. I've worked myself into a lather for the last hour or so to no avail. Anyone have any tricks to solving this? I COULD start it at the end of the first break but why waste the build of the track, ya know? I'm thinking about letting Live 'auto' warp it but I have to work in a bit for a couple hours before I can get knee deep again. Thanks for listening to me whine.

The trick is to find the first clear downbeat in the track, it doesn't matter where - it could even be all the way at the very end.

Listen to where it "feels" like one major arrangement block in clip view (8, 16, 32), is ending, and another one is beginning.

Find that spot - right at the point is where you want to set your '1'. The next step is to get a tight two bar loop starting at that '1'. In your case you will know because the claps will line up where they need to be.

At that point you can now set markers at accurate (16, 32 bar) gaps till you reach the end.

Now look back toward the beginning before the '1'. Double click on -32, (make sure and zoom in and adjust) then another -32 will appear. Double click that ...

In this way you work your way back to the true '1' in the track. There's a lot more but thats the basic method for non-percussive material or ambient.

Try starting from a point where have definate beats, ensure it is in time with the metronome, then backtrack it through the ambient part. ie click for example at -33 and start from here

It may be that the particuar song you have is just arranged differently so you might need to edit it (loop a section?) to get it to fit in with your music
