I've got my main desktop/studio and my laptop...I carry live 5 on each.
I'm using my laptop for mostly pre-production...working on beats, sounds, etc... When I'm liking what i got...I'll move it on over 2 my desktop, that has considerably more power, and lay down vocals, leads and start working on my mix.
Now i'm transferring my files from machine to machine using a 2gb flash drive(.als and sounds files), which of course is tedious.
Usually after a few days of listening, I'm going back for a re-mix which I would like, on occasion, to do on the laptop, away from home.
I know that there's got to be a way to sync 2 computers (for transferring files) I have no idea if this can be done simutaneously (master/slave???)
...(i'm using Line 6-toneport KB37 for my soundcard on desktop and when i'm travelling i use the toneport UX1 with the laptop.)

Try FX Teleport, with this you can even use one pc for DAW and the other as a virtual rack.

UNfortunately that one is only for a Windows platform. I would be curious if there is anything similar for Macs...

it's been a while since i've set it up, but me and a friend use it to maintain files when working at each other's houses, anything we made or changed is on my computer ready to go when i get home or vice versa.

basically it goes:

*set up the software on both computers with the same sign-up/username.
*do "add devices" on the foldershare site, add both machines.
*make your songs, samples, whatever directories into "libraries", also on the foldershare site.
*associate the devices (your computers) with the libraries.

i would recommend testing it out on some bogus files and folders first and get a feel for how it works as it can and will overwrite things if you're not careful. obviously version numbers of your live tracks should be used if you want to have revisions.

the general gist is that they will sync the contents of each other's libraries in pretty much real time when files are changed/moved/added. they have to be connected to the net however, and the only lag is file size/speed, but the rest is automatic and very quick for the most part.

if the machines are on the same network most of the time, you could also share a drive on one, then on the other machine map a drive to the first machine's shared drive and then turn on offline file sync. however that's not as easy to set up or maintain, especially if you need to have mirror syncs of the files.

If both machines are macs you can just use rsync.

Rsync is great for syncing between to machines. Thats how most web site mirrors work and since OS X is based on unix, you can use it on laptops and desktops

remember that sharing files on one machine over the network would cause a delay on the other computer which needs some extra time to access those files, so abviously opening files and working in real time would be slower, and you can experience breaking the sounds.
