Strange USB behaviour. Lots of CPU spikes on notebook!

Im having problems with the USB on my notebook. When an USB soundcard is installed, I cannot even playback an audio file in WMP without dropouts. Now I have connected an RME via cardbus and this seems better but when I move my USB mouse, I got cpu spikes in Abeton Live 6 and Cubase SX2.2. According to Windows XP Pro there are no IRQ conflicts (Device Manger) but Im not so much of a computer wizard. I even dont know what IRQ means. When I install XP in standard mode instead of ACPI mode (which is default), I have no USB issues.. But since standard mode is pretty dangerous for a notebook, Im back in ACPI mode. The notebook is a Compaq Evo N800c.
