MIDI quantize should operate as note is played

Hi, please see this topic for a bug that needs ironing out.

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=

In a nutshell, MIDI notes in a loop are quantized after the phrase has finished being played. If you are fractionally early playing the first note when recording the loop this results in the first note of the phrase being missed off on the first pass of the loop, as it isnt quantized quickly enough. Subsequent passes are fine as the quantization has kicked in.

Consensus seems to be that quantize should work as a note is played, or immediately afterwards. This would fix the problem which can be very frustrating in a live set when every note counts.

Seems like it would only be partial on the first take - I mean you can't move a late note back in time until the next loop...

You could hold early notes until the next quantize point, obviously

I just mean that some notes will need to be moved forwards, and some backwards. The ones which need to be moved forwards could be done theoretically in real-time, but not the backwards ones.

I understand that it could still be processed somewhat after playing but before the loop

I'm just pointing out that it would not necessarily be able to effect what you hear on the recording pass, if that's in fact what you mean. only 1/2 way...

Cool, I'm not the only one having this problem. Glad I found this thread. Here are the steps to reproduce this issue:

1.) Set Metronome and record a midi clip into track 1 scene 1 while routing the midi notes to a separate audio track so you can hear it (i.e. Reason), then stop recording.
2.) Record a new midi clip into track 1 scene 2, and stop recording.
3.) Alternate playback between the two scenes and you'll see that the first note of the selected scene will not play.

The reason why we need this feature is so we can hear 'un-stuttered' loop playback after we choose a different midi instrument on the fly (until we find an instrument we like before global recording to master track - playback of audio clips do not behave like this).
:D

I posted this in the other thread, ( http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0 )

I'm going to add it here as well.

------

Same problem here, but I'm not so sure it can be entirely written off to a quantize issue.

The reason I say that is because I am noticing that for certain takes, particularly pads where I am holding the beginning note for extended periods of time, this problem will occur again upon a relaunch. First pass only, subsequent passes play fine.

For example, my first take is an 8 bar pad loop. Global Quantize set to one bar, record quantize set to pretty much anything (I've tried all settings). I hold the first chord for 3 bars, do whatever I am going to do for the next 5 bars and at the end I launch the scene again to repeat the take.

Silence for that first 3 bars. Frustration. Subsequent passes play fine. Ok, duplicate the clip, scroll down to the next scene, disarm the pad track, arm a bass track for recording, figure out what I am going to play, then launch the scene to record my bass take - silence on the pad track for those first three bars again... major frustration becuase my groove just got blown all to hell...

Subsequent passes are fine.

See what I'm trying to say? This really is a drag for live performance. I'm talking strictly midi here, not audio. it happens with all types of takes, drums, bass, leads, but it seems to be the most problematic with these pad parts I am trying to do lately.

Something to do with the note length maybe? I don't know.

I'm running Live 5.2.2.

Same problem - loop doesn't play first note first time thru

Hi All,

Even when I'm just producing (not playing live) I have this issue and it's really frustrating! I'm using Live 6.0.7 and FM8. Here's what I do:

1. Hit metronome
2. Record a loop with Sineshifter patch (one long note for 4-8 measures)
3. Hit stop and quantize beginning and end
4. Hit play, I get a little "chik!" on the first time thru, and then it plays normally after that.

Looking forward to a solution as this is REALLY frustrating!!

Cheers,

Well, I spoke too soon. It turns out to be an issue with that specific patch in FM8 only. If anyone has any experience with FM synthesis and wants to try to reproduce (or fix) this annoyance, I'm all ears (er, eyes?).

Cheers!
