Hey,

My lady and I are going to Boston this weekend. Anything especially awesome going down?

Any restaurants that I should check out?

We're staying in the theatre district. Any nearby places, bars or breakfast joints I should know about?

Any coffee shops with internet? I like leaving my laptop behind when I can!

From where you'll be staying you can walk to the Prudential Street area and Newbury street. On Newbury you'll find tons of shops and restaurants and coffee shops. It's a really expensive area, but some good stuff non the less.

For more bohemian feel, get on the red line on the T and go to Harvard square in Cambridge. You'll have to fight it out with Harvard students but Cambridge has some cool stuff as well.

There's also the faneuil hall area but it's really toursisty and the bars are usually full of frat boy types.

There's a pub near Central Square in Cambridge called The Plough and Stars and my friends tell me they serve really good food.

Also in Central Square is The Middle East. It's the musical hub for the area. Decent middle eastern food, but if eat there, definitely get the Pumpkin Kibby, and Fool MaDamas as an app.

Go out to Jamaica Plain and have pints at Brendan & Behan. In a city filled with Irish pubs, B&B is by far the best vibe.

There's plenty of nice restaurants/cocktail bars downtown near the Theatre district or up on Boylston or Newbury St; I'll give my votes to Vox, Stephanies and Sonsie. Dillards is another nice place to take a girl (it's on Boylston too).

For more pubby-types there's Solas, The Beantown Pub, Silvertone, The Beacon Hill Pub downtown..

My favorite restaurant in town is actually in Somerville; it's called EVOO and it's unbelievable food, American-fusion, really unpretentious too (but a bit expensive).

What kind of music are you into? RISE is an afterhours club at the side of the Theatre District.. it's open till 7am Fri and Sat. There's a cracking little place next to it on Stuart St called "Flashes"

Agreed - Faneuil Hall during the day is fun, at night it's a pain in the ass..

I miss Boston so much, haven't been back since the late Nineties...I'm sure it's very different now compared to then!

Since I was a student when I lived there, I was dirt poor so I can't recommend any "nice" places, but that's the beauty of a place like Boston - there's something for everybody, on every single block!

Most of the main places to check out have already been mentioned....

For dancing/club music check out Avalon, on Landsdowne st. behind fenway.
For a great variety of beer and $1 hamburgers check out Bukowski's, near Dillon's on Boylston.

Boston pretty much sucks, unless you are a meathead, in college and/or a suicidal sports fanatic. The bars stay open until 2 but public transportation stops running at midnight, makes a lot of sense huh? Tortoise played last night at the museum of fine art, it was at 6:30 though. Wild town!

ha, yeah i guess i've been pretty disappointed with this town. coming from NY, it's hard not to be. but still, it could be really cool here. it's just a very poorly run and mismanaged place. and boring.

sydneys pretty boring too

not for the lack of entertainment, but more the lack of true diversity and the sparse population factor.

all the cool stuff is too seperate and diff parts of town with no cool stuff in between.

the city is just full of more of the same.. and man food has gotten so expensive here in the last 5 years.

It's all about perspective; coming from Baltimore, I assure you Boston RULES! So much culture and activities, it is one of the "cutting edge" cities for pop culture and the arts. Come down to B-more and find out what a cultural vacuum really feels like!

However, there's always a flipside...like, our Dunkin' Donuts are open 24hrs, and the cost of living is ridiculously cheap compared to Beantown.

Yeah I won't agree with the fact that the town is a bit dull -- but like you say it depends on your perspective.

Coming from the UK six and a half years ago to Boston was like someone turning the lights off on my nightlife prospects.. don't get me wrong there are plenty of things to do. Just that the bars close at 1am or 2 at the latest...

That being said I was contemplating the other day that I've probably added a couple of years to my life being away from the Glasgow club scene...
