Mac Pro Quad 2.66 4gb Ram. Good setup for Live?

Post by ICN » Wed Jul 11, 2007 5:56 pm

I'm waiting for my brand new Mac Pro 2.66 quad to be delivered.. Any day now!! Cant wait. :)

I've got 4gb of Ram with it too.. so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how you find live responding on your Mac?

Does anyone have this same configuration? I'm getting 2x 250gb drives with it and a 192 Audiophile Soundcard.

Does / would it strain the Mac easily? Does its performance struggle? At what point does it start to give up on you or has it caused you any / many issues?

I think it should be an excellent set up (famous last words..) - but I would really appreciate your opinions as y'all have probably had the time to weigh up all the pros & cons!

My only worry about it is that Live seems quite a hungry program at times.

Cheers,

J

Wont work with the MacPro as there are no PCI slots in the machine.

i dont have a mac, but on my quad core live is a dream to use.

i was running vista which was the a bit nicer than xp, but had to go to xp due to problems in audio OUTSIDE of live... :S

either way 4 x cores + 4 gb ram = big boner

Hi Nagal.. Thanks for the warning.. really appreciate it.

Just checked there - Mac Pro has PCI Express. Thanks a million.. you have saved me a lot of bother Mate!!

I've been looking at USB / Firewire S/card reviews for the last few Hrs.. My eyes are falling out of my head at this stage.. Anyway, think I will go with the Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1. Seems good VFM, and has a midi controller on it.

The McPro (worst. name. ever.) has both analogue and digital inputs onboard. They'll work fine with Live and give you as low a latency as anything USB or Firewire (I can take it to about 10ms on my iBook G4 - you shouldn't have a problem with your McPro unless you're playing an actual instrument together)... You *might* want something of a higher quality, but to be honest I'd get the computer first and wait a few weeks to decide. The built-in audio on Macs is really good.

If you need more than one stereo in/out it's different, of course, but most people don't these days.

If you need a mic pre just get something with a digital out and connect it that way.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.
