Playing Live Synth, channel change

Hi, I'm trying to play a multilayer instrument. For example, Layer 1, which responds to midi channel 1 is legato, layer 2, which responds to midi channel 2 is staccato. In the past I always switch channels on my keyboard to play the different layers. In ableton, how can I do that? No matter what channel the keyboard plays in, ableton changes it to channel 1 for the instrument. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
