so they both go for about $400 US...8 xlr/trs inputs, phantom powered..i prefer if somebody out there have tried both firewire interfaces for a more objective comparison...i use a coreduo macbook with 2gb ram for multitrack analog recording. I probably won't need more than 4 phantom powered inputs (but no less than 3). I'm kinda new at this so that's why i may sound retarded. thanks for any help dudes.

I use FIREPOD with PC for almost 2 years and I'm very happy with it.
no problems at all, altough it has only two powered inputs.

you can do analog on the macbook???
uhhhh but anyway, the Presonus is the tried and true one out of the two. You know you're getting a good buy with that. It probably has better preamps
But the Alesis has ADAT lightpipe. So you can just buy even BETTER preamps later when you have more money?
Think about the future and what features you will need then.

Did you go with the Alesis IO? Are you happy with your purchase? I'm actually trying to find a new sound card and these are two candidates I'm looking at.
Let me know!

I just got the presonus firepod (works great so far!)
Seems to me that all 8 inputs have phantom power.... there's a little button on the front to enable phantom power for inputs 1-4, or 5-8.
