slow display update

Hello wonderful creative types,
I an new around here and I have a question which I am confident has already been discussed somewhere. but I'm unable to find it. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be much appreciated.
I have bought a new dual core desktop computer, and since I have installed Ableton I have noticed very poor performance when zooming in. It has always been the case that when you zoom in so far that it suddenly goes very slowly, but this seems to be extreme to say the least.
Is it my graphic card? Is the something I can change in preferences to improve this?
I have found that when I minimise the recorded audio tracks is arrangement view, that it improves a lot, but I would appreciate it if anyone and point me at a better solution.
