I dont know if this is a vista thing with handling Ram, but I loaded and empty set then went through a few presets in the Keys folder - and settled on the full fat version of Grand piano

I was playing it for a little bit, then added a reverb and then a ping pong delay to the returns and it was so choppy I couldnt happily play it at all

then I looked in task manager and it said at the bottom that 90% of physical memory was being used, but looking at Live6.0.7.exe in the task manager it was using 300MB of ram maximum, and the next process using any significant amount of ram were two at about 25MB and after that most things were under 1MB or very low at least

so I dont know where all this ram was being used

but I got the "serious program error" message about 10 times before I brought up task manager to close Live after clicking end process many times then leaving it (with Live6.0.7.exe still in the list) and came to write this post - then I just looked after a bit and it's finally gone and the total physical ram used is now down to 36% (still not brilliant for no programs loaded, but that seems normal with this Vista laptop)

so....

1. does all the ram, including EIC instruments etc being used by Live show up in that figure reported in task manager?
2. am I having these problems because I just dont have enough ram for EIC grand piano?
3. or is it my Hard disk letting me down?
4. is there anything I can do?

in the task manager, in the "Display" menu, choose column, and then check the "size of virtual memory" box (these are translations from french, it might not be these exact words).
you'll then see all the memory used by the programs.

thanks, but I'm sure it is not accurate - I have 1GB of RAM and task manager said 90% of physical RAM was being used, but Live was only using about 300MB - and the other processes were nowhere near 700MB

although I upgraded ram and a HD at the same time so it makes it hard to tell exactly what made the impact...

i feel pretty safe saying 1G ram will not cut it for the grand piano.

I think I'm finding Vistas biggest flaw - sometimes it actually feels like I've gone backwards from an Athlon 2200 with 1GB ram - I now have a dual core 1.73 with 1GB ram and it feels more sloppy than it used to sometimes

and the whole time the CPU meter barely registers

so I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and start saving for some more ram

seems amazing that I cant even use it on this machine though

do you include the VM value in the 300MB?

do you include the VM value in the 300MB?

I dont know what you mean

what i explained in the 2nd post: the task manager only displays part of the memory used. you need to display the virtual memory to know what any program is really using.

this is the same kind of problem i was having and i've got 2 gb of ram. seemed like everytime i open up an instrument in the EIC my free memory would take a serious hit (1.5 gb down to 332 mb).
another question i have: is there anyway to get inactive RAM back after its used to open up EIC instruments?

From what I've heard, 1 GB of RAM with Vista just won't cut it with audio apps. I'd recommend 2 GB for any Vista32 system (audio or not), and at least 4 GB for Vista64.

There are programs to do stuff like that but I think it is generally considered better to just let the OS manage the RAM. However if a program is buggy and not releasing it properly then

i dont know if this is what ur experiencing craig but in vista the os pre-caches most frequent recently used apps and os functions in the memory so they can be called upon quicker.

in the task man it will show up as used memory but vista will release this memoryspace if an application requests it.
