OK, so I've got a clip in the arrangement view, and I want to record some automation. Before I record, it looks like this:



But when I record some automation, with punch in/out active, it looks like this:



Is there anyway to avoid the latter? It's the exact same clip, but it looks completely scrambled.
It doesn't look like a single clip any longer,
but rather as if it's just a selection in the track, or whatever, and the notes look like
they're not on beat (though they are). I want the clips to look exactly like they did
prior to recording automation.

I find the whole thing really confusing, and it's really hard to edit sections afterwards
if the notes don't look like they're on beat.

Right, but take a look at where the clip starts in both pictures. I can't believe
that I'm the only one who's experiencing this? The notes are still audibly on
beat, but visually, they're shifted.

I can tell your settings from the two pictures.

You have the track's record enable button on, you have the OVR button on, and you punch in the global record button when you do your automation,

correct?

Disarm the track itself. OVR shouldn't matter either way in that case,

you only need the global record button to record automation.

By arming the track, you have actually created a new clip. However since the OVR button is on, the new clip contains the old clip's note data. That is why it has the offsets to it's start marker and loop brace.

I'm impressed - you definitely got the settings right!

I tried what you suggested - first on a VST and then on a rewired Reason
device. The former worked, just as you described, but I can't seem to get it
to work on a rewire track, which, as far as I can tell, must be armed before
you try to record anything. I suppose I'll have to move the clip into session,
temporarily remove it from the arrangement, record automation, and then
move it back to arrangement?

On a Reason track, what are the parameters you are trying to record automation for? (are they reason parameters or Live parameters?)

I use one MIDI track for each Reason device. The midi track receives general
midi numbers from my controllers, send the midi signals to Reason, which
feeds audio back to Live. So, basically, I'm recording automation for knobs
and sliders on the Reason devices.

I'm not that good at stuff like that, but maybe what you could try is to use an extra MIDI track for each device

One contains the notes, and is in the Arrangement

The other contains the CC data and is in the session view

I know that this works but I don't know if it's a good enough solution

This is why I wish Live had a joint MIDI/audio track for rewire devices, so that
the track could be treated exactly like a regular VST MIDI track. In fact, I just
thought of an even better idea: a rewire track, which acts as a sort of a
"dummy" device, like the instrument/effect racks, which would just be a shell
with a customisable number of parameters which could be mapped to
controllers in Live, but which would only pass the signals on to a rewire device,
and receive the resulting audio
