apologies if something like this has been suggested, but I wish that when I drag a device onto a track while recording an arrangement that it would register in the recording.. maybe automate 'device on' ?

You could just automate device on.

the thing is that i am often inspired to add a device once i start recording, and then there's no indication about when I did it..
