What do you use to convert to mp3 once you render your track. A friend is telling me of other software but it is windows only.

Download LAME mp3 codec and use Quicktime to export. But it may require Quicktime Pro. Anyway, Quicktime Pro is very powerful for many things and doesn't cost too much so it's now a waste of money if you don't happen to have it yet.
Quicktime Pro has Export with LAME MP3 component downloaded you can choose MP3 from the export options. If you happen to have many wavs to convert, you can open them all in Quicktime by dragging them over the icon in the Dock and choose export for each. Quicktime Pro will just add them to the export-list and they will all be exported simultaneously (though you have to start the export on each one separately)
You can download LAME codec from here:

I'm talking about Quicktime Pro because I think exporting requires this but I'm not 100% sure.

I use Max for ALL my conversions, works great. The LAME encoder for quicktime was always very flakey for me.
