strange midi cpu spikes!?

I keep running into this little conundrum, most of the time I'll be playing in live and everything is just fine, cpu meter is steady and jumps arround when synths hit and then settle down when the instrument is loaded and is steadilly used...
but then sometimes, not very often, but sometimes I get these crazy cpu spikes when ableton is receiving and using midi control changes...
I tested ableton when it's in this cpu spike mode and even if I midi map a knob to a disabled or inactive effect or any knob for that matter the cpu meter is normal but when I start turning I get a crazy spike of probably up to 50%+...
I've tested and it's not just the meter that freaks out it does actually use that much cpu power to process this simple task....
the cc has to be mapped or else there is no cpu spike(obviously)...
