How to record a DJ set as I'm playing it?

Can't figure out what combination of settings so that I can record from the master out mix of my mixer into ableton. I'm assuming this should all be done via USB and I do not need to do any further cabling.

The object is to record the actual mix coming from the mixer since there are CJD's attached and I'd like to use the effects on the mixer as well and Ableton needs to record all of this.

Setup:
MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz Intel, 4gb Ram)
Tiger 10.4.9
Xone 3D

the forum search sucks but xone is an odd word

for one.

also, change the thread title to "HELP - Xone 3D setup" and you'll get some proper help.

I"m the OP of the link you posted and that link helped me setup but there was nothing there on how to setup Ableton to record.

The search function is quite worthless, and I've been to the other 2 Ableton fourms with not much help either.

So my original question stands, what combination of settings do I need in Ableton, Xone and Mac to be able to record my sets directly from the mixer (to include all effects and CJD's) right back into Ableton.

The 3D has a built in Audio Interface, right? If this is the case, you'd just need to route the master out of the 3D (I'll assume it has an "extra" master out - maybe labelled "Booth"...) back into one of the Ins. Set that in as the Audio In on a track in Live, and Record Arm that track. Now, anything that is played through the 3D (CDJ's/TT's/Ableton) will be recorded BACK into ableton on the track that you have set up as your recording track...

I've tried those and many other combinations and I cannot get it to record in.

Are you saying that one of my SC channels is dedicated to recording?

I know you make it sound easy, but it really isn't...do you have this setup or just taking an educated guess on how it's suppose to be?

Sorry MAt - just an educated guess. I have no idea if any of your soundcard channels is dedicated to recording. It's easy to find out, though:

1) Go into Lives Preference
2) Click on Audio
3) Goto soundcard setup

You should get a list of all of the soundcards audi ins, and outs. Make sure that the ones you need are enabled. It might be worthe nabling all the ins to determine which one to use for recording...

Good Luck!

I've got the basics covered, my audio preferences are setup properly, (I actually have 4 channels out of Live by setting up an aggregate device in the Mac, the 4th output uses the headphone minijack to Line 4 on the Xone).

Basically, I'm looking for specifics:

1. What settings is Ableton Preferences?
2. What are the Ableton track inputs?
3. How is the Xone Config Utility setup?

Cool - why not use the line-in on the laptop as your input for recording?

I thought of that, but doesn't ableton and the Xone already have a digital in utilizing the USB connection? That's a cleaner and more ideal input...

I hate you. No, Ok so I don't hate you.. Just jealous of your xone 3d... That mixer is sooo shiny... It's like what the djm-1000 wishes it could be but never will. Sorry for my unhelpful tangent.

sorry but i did'nt read above, but this is a simple vst that you just stick on your master, hit record, name the file and start playing..... stop it when your done and you've got a wav file........ couldn't be simpler.

I use it all the time, dosn't get in the way and records eveything you do at full quality....

the only problem is that it will only record whats going on "inside" of ableton, so if your in to the habit, like i am, of jamming with people on decks or with various instruments, then it will not record these, unless you start routing them back in through ableton.

THIS you can do directly in Live without any VST. Just set a track's input to resample, record enable and click on an empty slot.

But this isn't what tomekinc want to do. He want to record what comes out of his Xone 3D which is more than Live sends out.

Very hard to answer without knowing more about the xone 3D. Don't they have support/forums?

I'll try them too, but thought this is a routing question within ableton....

Whenever I broadcast a set I do in ableton, I use a piece of software called Nicecast from Rogue Amoeba. It hijacks the master audio and streams it without affecting the actual audio out in any way.

They also have a piece of software called Audio Hijack that works the same way. It just records whatever Ableton is putting out through the master so you could use that to record it.

My objective is to record the master out from the mixer, so that I can capture everything and not just what I do in Ableton.

For instance, the Xone has effects and I have 2 x cdj's plus turn tables and other effects plugged into it, I want to record EXACTLY what's coming out of the mixer master output and record that right back into ableton.

I'm beginning to think that you cannot record your own sets.

Ableton support has been zero help, no response to my emails, no response to this thread (even though the Berlin office asked for details then nothing) and it's impossible to get through via phone.

Allen & Heath support isn't quite sure how to record a set from the mixer either, they think it's an Ableton routing...

How do DJ's record their sets with this setup?
