apogee duet doesn't have dj pre fader listening

if enough people vote on this poll i'm going to link this poll to an email that i'm going to send to apogee tech and development.

good idea? maybe, but as i haven't done anything don't thank me yet, but do answer the poll.

Of course if it already had sep. outputs I'd be happier but it ain't like you CAN'T.
No midi is a bigger dealbreaker>>if you want to use a controller for Live/Traktor djing then you have to schlep some kind of small midi interface around if your weapon of choice ain't usb. MIDI on the breakout cable would be more worth petitioning for as it should be more easily (read cheaply) improvised.

Q: Why can't the headphone output be a different software output than the main output? I would love to use this in a live situation using Ableton Live or Native Instruments' Traktor. Even if I'm recording I need an output for the cue mix and one for the main out.
A: Never before has Apogee quality been delivered at such a low price point. It's important to understand that there is no product out there that will compare sonically to Duet, short of spending thousands more (i.e. Ensemble). To ensure the headphone output achieved the quality we sought, we had to have the same signal path to both the headphone output and main output. To include a separate D/A for the headphone out would have increased the cost significantly. That being said, one of the coolest features of Core Audio is the ability to aggregate multiple devices into a single device. This is possible with the built-in audio I/O of the Mac. So for cue mixes, aggregate Duet and the built-in output and you're good to go.

aggregate...intressting...this made the duet intresting...

im not a OSX user but might be so my question is...you could pair the duet with let say a firebox and use the midi and what ever of the firebox with the output of the duet?....what i mean is, make Core Audio use it as if it were one device?

CoreAudio treats audio and MIDI devices separately, so if you want to use the firebox just for MIDI routing, but another soundcard for input/output, this is of course no problem; you would just need to configure live to do this. Aggregate devices only combine audio inputs and outputs into a single virtual soundcard.

what about latency? right now i have a good latency under a fireface 800, my macbook pro with my full live set gives me a 512 buffer, wich translates to 12 ms ...

i would love to get a duet for my live set, but i need to get some buffer/latency info first!

Considering I can get almost the same latencies with the built in output that I can with my Ultralite, I don't think latency will be an issue. The Mac soundcards are actually pretty good in this regard.

Indeed, I used to get better latency with the built-in card on my PBook 1.67 than on my Echo Indigo Dj, but latency wasn't really an issue so t'was no biggie.
Just tried making an aggregate device with Fieface 800 and built-in, super-easy, built-in outputs show up as 1 and 2 so you'll have to get your brain rond it if deaing with many outs..maybe a way to configure order of device appearance? Igor, the shove! To the lab!

damn, i always write like a damn drunk on forums...

i currently use 1 sound card for midi and 1 for audio...
what i meant was more in the line of using firebox for inputs and what not and duet for outputs. but now that i think of it, it might beat the purpose of using duet at all. If one uses lesser quality A/D´s of sound cards such as Firebox as inputs and use Duet as output, it would still result in the lesser quality of the Firebox....

Anyways....Aggregate aggregates audio inputs...and outputs...total kickass!
