trashed everything and re installed but when opening "scanning vst" live shuts down. I guess I am screwed......maybe I will try to get in touch with ableton tomorrow

move all of your VSTs out of your custom vst folder, then start Live.

If it starts ok, then start reintroducing the VSTs one by one and restarting Live each time, until you find the culprit that crashes Live.

If youve moved installation folders of already installed VSTs you may get this issue.

do you know where the custom vst folder is on a mac?

the plugin folders are found under: library/audio/plugins/vst or yourhome/library/audio/plugins/vst.......
