Hey i am not sure if the above term makes sense, if not think chemical brothers or digitalism where they always have fat bass leads throught the song.
My question is how do they do this. The sounds breathe with the music, quiet down and then punch out etc etc. Is there some sort of program which can help you do this or does it come down to skill of synthesis programming?

Sidechain compression... which Live can't do natively.

the best thin' to do this is to sidechain your bass-line with the kick-drum.

how it goes:

1) put a sidechain-compressor on the bass-line-track. note: you're sidechain-compressor should have a key-input. check this out, it's not free, but for me it's the best sidechain-compressor eva:

2) send your kick-drum-track to a return-track, and the outs of the return-track to the key-input of the bass-line-track. with the sends of the kick-drum-track you can affect the duckin', more sends = more duckin' = more bump-effect, less sends = less duckin' = less bump-effect

note: for more individual rhythmically action in the bass-lines, you can also put a simple-delay on the return-track or a beat-repeat. with this combination u can create awesome duckin' rhythmically bass-line movements......
