How many times can you unlock?

I was reinstalling Live6 on my pc earlier and when i went to unlock it said that i have used up all my unlock codes and needed to email ableton about it. (have done so)
The problem i have had is that i originally installed it on a laptop that was incapable of running it (installed and updated having to unlock each time) so i purchased a new one especially. installed fine until i ran the updates where i ended up having to unlock again. The old laptop was reformated as i have no need to use this for ableton now so did not reinstall again there.
I then installed live on my pc, which worked fine, had to unlock on update also so have been using it with no problems only to upgrade my mobo and cpu today and find that i've no unlock codes left. This pc is where i record and do most of my audio work so that when i go out live i can move it all straight to the laptop...or that is what i hoped, but now it looks like i've paid a loada cash for something i wont be able to use.
I assumed that i would be ok uninstalling and installing as i own the ableton live 6 retail and i was hoping that on reinstalls that it would have kept the unlock code to avoid me having any problems. I've never had problems with any other software and i like to reformat and clean my pc & laptop totally every 6months to make sure its running solid....looks like thats gonna be out the window too.

Hi,
As the license states, you're allowed to have Live installed on two machines at the same time, anytime. That means that, indeed, if you change a computer, you'll be allowed to re-unlock on the new machine, to always have Live installed on two machines. The license also says that you're supposed to use only one copy of Live at once, so you're not meant to run the two computers with Live simultaneously.
We do limit the number of unlocks for obvious reasons, but the support team is happy to give additional unlocks, generally within the same day, with a short explanation form you. The do need your serial number as well.
Kind regards,
Amaury

Thankyou for the reply. I have emailed with serial and challenge codes, im just hoping that i can get to using the software soon as it is idle at the moment.
One of the things i do not understand is why ableton when you install the update does not collect the information from the previous installation and still leaves the shortcuts n such to access previous installations....is this a common fault or is it just depending on a persons system setup?
The reason i ask is that i gave a challenge code for the pc after i rebuilt it but have not updated it.
I only use the laptop version for live (or that is what i was hoping) and i will only have one running at a time in the studio as it's only the pc that is connected to my audio gear for recording purposes.

Hi,
when installing an update, the software should take over defaults for the system, the unlock key and the Preferences. You'll have to start the new update once for the Operating system to know that's the one to use though.

Hi,
After reformatting, you'll have to unlock again, so, better to ask support for a new unlock possibility before doing so. After a clean install, you may consider using a ghost tool, as to backup the clean system, so that you don't have to reformat all the time.

Thanx again for a fast reply, wish some of the other companies i purchase software and hardware from were so quick to give answers.
Hopefully this will be the last time i have to install, will ghost my pc after installation and unlock.

I have just posted you a request for unlocking Live on my new Laptop. Once this is done I will deinstall the other version on my older laptop. Will i need to send you my Live serial number?
