I am comparing a kick drum in the preview browser to the same sound played in simpler, (as well as sampler and impulse which do the same thing) level matched, no settings changed in simpler--the sound is very different. It seems Simpler is adding a spikey attack to the kick as well as reducing the bass.

When i put kick drum in an audio track slot and play it, it does not have this change in sound, it sounds just like in the preview browser.

Its weird because it doesn't happen with all sounds.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it something I'm doing wrong?

When you play it back in simpler are you sure you are using the right note with the right root note set?

Those are things that wouldn't matter in the browser or impulse...

Well I just tried this on a few kick dums samples and I couldnt hear any difference (spent about 5 minutes listening in Senheiser HD-600's.

I set the sample in simpler to 0.0db unity, and I made sure the Attach envelope was fastest and the D,S,R were set to Highest values. I also made sure that midi triggered simpler at highest velocity.

No difference at all that I can hear. If there is its very very very very slight.

Check it out for yourself for the absove settings.

I haven't tried Impulse ill have a look

EDIT: Just tried the same method in Impulse too sounds the same to me.

Anybode else got any thoughts?

I'm thinking he's either hearing the warped sound in preview/audio track and not in simpler OR he's noticing a click in simpler at the beginning of the file because preview and audio tracks have a fade to remove clicks which simpler does not have.

Check your midi keyboard transpose settings

I concur with John. Turn off warping for one-shots.

Yes, it's the warping & fade settings. Turn them off.
There have been other threads about this problem.

yes, it's due to your default warping settings. Live will try and play previewed clips or sample with the warpsettings on, so you can hear what it would sound like. This is not a good setting for single hits, turn it off. if you really like the sound the sample has in the browser you can try to replicate it with the ADSR of the simpler, or see if it sounds good in the arrangement view and then consolidate it...

I don't have warping turned on (I have selected "unwarped one-shots" and auto warp long samples off as well).

I think simpler does have a fade in the beginning (attack's lowest setting is .10ms which is set that way to remove clicks at the beginning, I presume.)

Most of the time when this happens it's just a little click at the beginning of the sound. Not the end of the world but I'm surprised I'm the only one who has this problem or is noticing it.

I have the same issue with Impulse:

1. Audition a kick drum single hit in the broswer.

2. Drag it into an empty slot in Impulse.

3. The sound of the kick in Impulse is very different than the way it sounds in the browser.

I have all the Impulse settings for this slot set to be as uneffected as possible (no change to start time, transposition, stretch, etc.) and it still sounds different ... different pitch, different attack. Sounds like a different kick drum.

And I turned off the warping options in the Preferences.

This is a bummer...

i agree impulse and simpler changes the onhits and i dont know why.warp is turned OFF! its sounds like a very subtle gate something like that.

OK, I got to the bottom of this, at least in my case.

The kick drum sample I was auditioning has a Fade applied to it. For instance, when I bring the sample in to the Session or Arrange view, and look a the sample properties, even though it is unwarped and unlooped, the clip Fade option is selected in the Sample view window. This option applies a short fad in and fade out to the clip to avoid clicks and pops...but of course it changes the sound for samples with fast transients, like a drum.

Deselecting the Fade option and then bringing the sample into Impuse results in the sample sounding the same in both cases.

I stopped using impulse ages ago - it does somthing to the sound, though i cant pinpoint it.
