Hi Folks

Just back from the club after my dj set and thought id post a question to get some opinions on the way im feeling right now regarding the latest "in" kinda music.

One of my residency's is in a slightly more commercial dance club up here. I play house, electro and some of the older anthems and classics in my set. Always stuff the crowd know and nothing too adventurous. Basically its decent money and i get to upgrade my studio with it..so i put up and shut up, but i do have my limits to how commercial i will play.

Im 30 years old and have seen a few styles come and go over the past while. I remember when hardcore and what i call old school was all the rage in the 90s, trance was big around the 98 - 2000 odd era....it went commercial and hence pretty much the end of an era as far as that was concerned, i think the scene went into limbo for a bit before electro really kicked off. Now thats gone commercial it seems the scene is about to take another turn into something new. House music of course has always been here and all these offshoots relate back to that.

What is really making me think about things is the emergence of Hip Hop. Personally i can listen to some but i wont play it when im gigging. I think its best left for spinning around in ur car, or having sex to..whatever. Those slow throbbing basslines are great, but it simply aint the 4/4 shake ur ass kinda tracks i personally wanna be hearing in a dance club.

The thing is, so many younger people are coming to request hip hop tracks these days. Im wondering if this style is going to take over like Trance did back in the day.

People are loving the House music, as always...and some Electro is great as well. I just sense a real shift toward these hip hop beats and rappers that i aint liking one bit. Its making me feel like im getting old haha.

Anyway i just thought id share my thoughts. Maybe the scene is different where u are?

Here in North America Hip Hop has always been massive - but generally speaking there are specialized clubs and underground bars etc that won't play anything else.

Most clubs into house/trance/electronic may have the occasional night for hip hop at their venue but it's pretty rare you get people requesting Hip Hop in an electronica bar on progressive house night etc and even rarer and probably get you a beating if you ask an MC or a DJ in a hip hop club to put on some trance because you're not diggin' the hip hop sounds

Also, without wanting to sound stereotypical or start a flame war, many hip hop clubs are in the more ghetto parts of a city and the punters like it that way *street cred, street tuff, gangsta* so they can wear their colours and shoot each other without getting too much attention from the 'po-po' who are too scared/too indifferent to bother with them.

Cmon. Are you for real?! Only "underground" bars are the ones that won't play anything else but hiphop? So it's only the special hip hop clubs that will play hip hop all night?

In America, hip hop is ALSO being played continuously in the most ordinary of bars, and the most suburb and smallest of towns. It's completely ubiquitous right now. There's no need to seek it out. It's everywhere and it's played just as much in the small towns as in the citys if not more so. Even the most redneck bars (who seem 10 years behind the times) in rural America love the hip hop.

Hope things change, or at least that it balances out a bit. Even many the "cool" bars/lounges in the city that play house music, etc switch to hip hop around 11pm on friday/saturday nights to "really get things going". (ok there are a few exceptions here and there)

So maybe it's different in Canada than US...

it's hilarious that an electronic music magazine of all people would attempt to claim that hiphop is the only drug related mysogenistic music.
I guess future music has never even heard of electronic music or glowsticks and obviously knows nothing about any electronic scene. on top of that they actualy think that their readers are that stupid and gullable to believe that electronic music is 'clean' and that hiphop is dirty.....

on top of that they had the nerve to put up stephen marley as the saviour of hiphop
so i guess it's not only electronic music that they no nothing about but hiphop as well. there are alot of positive very well known rappers between anywhere and jamaica, and I love stephen marleys music but this article shows that the person who wrote it does not know their job. all i can say is watch what you eat cause everything is not fresh.

Just having a laugh. Hip Hop taking over? It TOOK over and was king for years but on other boards, hip hoppers are asking the question IS ELECTRONIC music taking over?

Both are very popular. Mainstream hip hop artists are making juicy big bucks (Kanye West and 50 cent are both selling bucketloads right now) to which no electronic artist can compare saleswise but many electronic artists are having success on playing live in clubs and picking up a nice amount of sales too.

In the U.S. rock reigned supreme in terms of records sales for decades. Then in the 90's hip hop claimed the thrown as highest selling genre. It's pretty much been that way ever since and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I always found D&B and Grime and the like to be Britain's version of hip hop (180 bpm v. 90 bpm); not sure if that's true. Either way, if Europe hasn't embraced hip hop as the dominant genre of popular music, it will happen soon. Fortunately, there's lots of great hip hop out there right now - you just have to dig for it.

Its amazing how u play in certain clubs and become oblivious to what is happening elsewhere in other genres. I wouldnt have thought hip hop to be massive, ive never had any interest in it to be honest. Not up in my area anyway....but now things are starting to change.

I just see young people asking for hip hop more and more often in clubs i play that generally cater for Commercial Dance music. Im talking a club ive played in for years, yet as the older generation starts to move on and this younger barely legal generation come in it seems all they wanna hear is Gansta beats. Yes they love the Electro as well, and good old fashion hand bag house. They get the Axwells, and David Guetta, Freaks and Fedde Le Grand and loads of stuff like that. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers / Killers Electro mixes work great...the dance floor is always full, yet they still come to me wanting a bit of Kanye West or 50 Cents..

Found all these replies to this post very interesting indeed. Maybe i better dig out the Gansta beats hehehe ......

Is that what you and your friends like or is house really the "best selling genre" of music in the UK?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't rock or pop or just "dance", which would include tarnce and your typical "euro-trash" dance music. (<--I'm not sure if Europeans refer to some of their crap as "euro-trash" but that's what we call that poppy trancy mainstream bs that comes out of there. We've got plenty of our own crap exports so don't get angry.)

BTW, I'm sitting in the birthplace of house and I went to two bars last night expecting house and instead it was hip hop. Crappy hip hop. House is still "big" I suppose, but it's underground or at least not mainstream.

If I had a dollar for everytime my friends (DJs) were asked to play some hip hop by some stupid chicks at a club...
