Seems the initial reaction to Logic 8 has cooled considerably.
I guess AL is cool again. Whew, that was scary.

i'm not sure about that. i think i'll be using logic more and more for typical DAW tasks.

i was really hoping for an overhaul of live's arrange window in version 7, but that seems to have dropped off the radar. which is fine of course for a performance tool, but for regular production work, i reckon logic will be getting a lot more attention.

in the de:bug interview somebody posted here recently, gerhard said they're actually starting to drop features from live. which to me sounds like focus on what live does best -- so live and logic will make for a great combo, imho.

that's a shame as live is so inspirational as a composition tool. but as soon as i start trying to layout a track in arrange view i find it really shows its weaknesses in that area. anyway, i agree that the two tools make a great combination.

do you know what,

If i make tunes using logic 8, they have a tendancy to be bassier and darker in context, with a smooth yet atmospheric feel.

If i make tunes in live, they sound a lot more electronic and upbeat, possibly a little harder.

I dont bother choosing between the two, just using what takes my fancy on that day - they both have cool instruments and effects so why not use both.

If i had little money and i had to choose, i would choose Live cos of teh live performance aspect.

But then logic does include soundtrack pro!!!

Sod it - they are both essential to a mac user.

Record the loops in live and then arrange in logic.

I just jam the tune out, in several stages and often a few cool sounding accidents happen which spur off another track.

I like to leave my mind open and take it as it comes.

I tend to do the exact opposite of this 8O

I think it's weird what you get with Logic 8 compared to Live 7 in terms of the amount you pay...

If I was on mac, or about to upgrade my computer, I would go with Logic in a heartbeat right now. I'm in shock about Live 7 - not because of the new features this time, but because of the cost of all those packages.

Talk about Live is going to increasingly revolve around how expensive it is for what you get.

The new Logic has been the best seller of all logic versions in the time its been released. I guess yoru worried that people will like Logic and maybe even new users will buy it or switch to it instead of AL. That will happen just look at the price features and whats included with Logic compared to AL. Ableton makes you pay for their sound samples and synths Apple doesnt. I personally find having to pay for samples that should come with my daw a bit rich.

I personally think that this time around, it has got out of control. I never thought I would say this... but it looks to me like time to migrate. Logic is tempting, but would involve switching everything over to mac, which is less appealing overall. But there's always programmes like Tracktion, Reaper, FL Studio... hell, even Samplitude is now cheaper than Live.

I think that Ableton know they have a niche in the live/stage/dj market... but this time they are overplaying their hand.

Was kind of interesting that Logic 8 got more posts in one day on Ableton's forums than Live 7 did :)

...and I think we'll see Logic 8 get constant mentions in every Live 7 thread.

Well, now when the Live7 is out there is no more discussion which program gives more bang for the buck.

Logic 8 is pretty cheap compared to Live with all (few) synths.

just to be the devils advocate - the upgrade to Live 7 is only $119 and you actually get alot for that

I agree the full package is a different story (although current owners of Live + instruments can get some alright deals)

I think Ableton are focusing alot more on what they do best now - hence licensing the add-on instruments from AAS rather than piling too much of their own resources into them - so you now have a choice if you want to get the integrated synths (which are good BTW) you can, but they are completely seperate

I don't see that at all. In fact, now that we can see Ableton's road map more clearly it may focus more attention on Logic. Personally I'll definitely have to think about upgrading to Live 7 or sticking with 6 and picking up Logic.
