I looked through all the info but couldn't find an answer to this question:
Can live 7 create REX files?
Or will we have to carry on using recycle?

I think the only way to create REX files is via 'Recycle'.

You can however create Live clips. Which are more flexible then rex files.

does sampler support rex files?
e.g. is it possible to map single slices like phatmatik?

Rex file format is owned by propellerhead (they allow anyone to import them, but only they can make them via recycle), but I bet (note that I do not really know) that in live 7 you will be able to create comparable files with similar functionality, they just won't be the universally recognized rex file.

Hadn't tried it yet...but from what I understand...
Drum Racks do everything phatmatik does+more...

how are live clips more flexible than rex's?

For starters:
- You can save multiple sequences of the same clip
- You can add slices from other loops
- You can add different instruments
- Automation, Macros,...

If what your asking is,,"Can i process individual slices in side the REX file independently of the other slices?" The answer is yes.
There is a feature called "Split to midi track" you hit this command and the REX file will be loaded into a drum rack and a midi file will be generated and placed into a clip on a midi track. the midi track has a small icon that you hit and each slice is assigned it's own fold out channel strip that can then be used any way any other channel strip is used,, you can add FX,, you can pan it or change it's volume,,, very very cool.

yes, they can do everything phatmatik can and more.
it will also take you 20 times longer... horses for courses I guess, they both serve different purposes.

not entirely true.
if you use the split rex to midi command it sets the rex file into a host plugin that assigns each slice its own sampler/simpler. this is, in effect, a series of racks in side a rack. what you can do from here is manipulate eash slice any way you like.
you can do all of this in PMP but, you are limited to how many outs you can use, and you also need to set up channel strips or each out,, live7 will do all of this for you and create a strip for each slice regardless of how many slices there are in the original loop.
adding fx is as simple as dragging the FX you want onto the cell in the drum rack that you want to process, and so that FX will become part of the drum rack,,,
this goes way beyond what live 6+PMP can do,, it even goes beyond what battery 3 can do,, more so if you have sampler to use over simpler.

In PMP I can re-slice an existing file loaded. Or move slide markers around AFTER it is sliced and used in a song. The way Live7 slicing looks, you can only edit slice boundries (i.e. warp markers) before it is slided. Once you slice it, it's just in a rack of simplers. That seems like an advantage to PMP over Ableton.
Not that I'm complaining. Just an observation.

you can do this in live 7 also.
If you use an unsliced loop you are able to have it be converted into a simpler or sampler instrument as i out lined earlier using the slice to midi track command.
You have a few choices based on note division or warp markers as to how the loop will be handled when sliced.
Once the lop has been processed you are free to click on a cell in the drum rack and edit your slices just as you would in any simpler/sampler instrument.
The only draw back to this method that i have found over using PMP is the time it takes,, the first few times you do this you do start to wonder if your computer is hanging. Maybe this is some thing that can be fixed before the actual release,, but then again,, it is quite a complicated process,, analyzing the loop,, slicing the loop,, creating an instrument and designing routing options,,, i guess thats the price for having a one touch command that does all of this for you.
