Issues with latency

I am using Ableton 6 for live shows. I usually run 6 Audio tracks ( not always simultaneosly 3-4 would an average), and 2 midi tracks to send impulses to external synths AND I use one input for a guitar. The latency I am getting on the guitar track makes it almost imposible to play. I want to use ableton 'cuz I love filtering the guitar throug its plug ins. I 've tried delay compensation, driver compensation, less buffer size ( I run 512 or 768). I kind of feel that nothing improves the situation except using just one or two audio tracks instead (not a big difference though). Is there a way out or just the technology isn't there yet?

512 samples is too high a latency for playing guitar effectively.

If your audio card supports direct monitoring use that for tracking guitar or lower the latency to 128 or 256 samples. 256 samples is the highest latency I can use without it driving me insane.

aha. leaving some of the clean signal from the guitar though the MOTU seems to let the guitarist play more confident while the fx running in parallel from Ableton (still with some latency) make his sound really wide and rich. I tried with the Guitar Rig from NI as a plug ins and it works beautifully. The wet/dry balance is about 60/40 %
I may have to take it easy on the fx of the rest of the tracks if I want to lower the buffer size to 256. Ill try and let you know.
thanks for you help.

Hi, I have a similar question.

I'm running Live on a 2,16 Hgz, 2 GB iMac. (Enough GB's i think?)

I also want to play realtime guitar just like him: http://www.ableton.com/_common/download ... ar_one.mpg

I tried to set up my iMac right, 256 Buffer Size, Error Compensation: o ms etc

I still have some latency, not a lot.

BUT:

Is it possible that i get rid of the latency if i use something like a TonePort or a M-Audio Fast Track USB ???

Grtz
