I am using Serato Scratch live to record my Dj sets into Ableton
running RCA to 3.5mm from my mixer in Ableton.
NO problems recording the set except that the quality just isn't good enough.
I have brand new needles, clean records etc.
is this to do with the quality of the Audio in through the macbook pro
or is there anything I need to specify when recording in through Ableton
your help is really appreciated.

You'll probably need to upgrade to a better soundcard. The audio on the MB's is 'ok', but not really what I'd recommend if you're seriously trying to record nice sounding mixes to pass out to people.

Listening is a very subjective thing. Unless you have a reference it is easy to get carried away by psycho-acoustic effects.
I know there are higher quality sound cards out there but is it really the ins on the mac that are the problem? There is a little background noise but I would say it is quiet acceptable. If you plan on burning CD's or rendering an MP3 is it going to be noticed?
Let's start with a description of what is wrong with the sound of the recording.
for example:
1) Is it noisy? 2) Are there pops and clicks through the recording? 3) Does the sound drop out? 4) Top end/ bottom end missing, harsh, weak?
An equiptment list would be helpful too. Technics, Stanton or somewhere in between? What mixer? Rane, pioneer, realistic.....?
Do you have a digital version of one of the tracks to compare the recorded record and a high bandwidth digital copy?
