Hi, When i go to preferences and try to assign my usb midi mixer in's and out's there used to be a setting for usb, now its gone. this has happened to me before and i had to reformat to get the option back. now 1 month after reformatting its back to the same old problem and i dont want to reformat again. How do i get ableton to see the system usb after it has already taken the option in preference away from me, and why does it do this? xp see's the device just fine so there is no issue there. i have tried everything from firmware to drivers to reinstalling software and nothing makes ableton see my system usb devices. any help is appreciated

BCF2000 mixer
E-Mu 1212m sound card

Two possible causes...

1) The most likely is power managemernt to the USB hubs. Windows turns it on by default; you want it off. Go to device manager and right click a USB hub to bring up its properties. Under the power management tab, uncheck anything that's checked. Repeat for each hub and reboot.

2) You have Norton on your machine. I've seen this mess with USB devices nore than once. If this is the case, use the Norton uninstall tool on the Symantec website and use something else for AV. Norton (and McAfee, for that matter) have no place on any audio machine (or any home machine).

Excellent Excellent advice! I did uncheck the power save mode and i do have norton corp and i uninstalled it however that did not solve my problem but it helped me figure out where the problem was. I did notice that everytime i plugged in the device windows would ask for a driver and automatically install one but ableton still didnt see it. So i tried to force a driver from the website and windows responded "this driver does not contain any information about your device. So i dug a little deeper and got the driver exe install from the website and it stalled the first time i ran it so i killed the process and tried again. Driver install successful and now Ableton see's the usb in's and out's! It was a driver issue but xp was saying that the device was installed properly when actually it wasnt. Im back up and running. Thanks again
