add au / vst plugins on OSX?

HOW DO YOU DO IT???
i got some free osx compatible vst / au plugs that i want to use, so i stick the vst in my "vst custom" folder, re-scan / re-open / re-start live / my computer and NOTHING new shows up!!!
i know that in windows, all you had to do was stick it in your vst folder and there it was! is there some kind of registry in osx that i dont know about?
i run osx 10.4.1 on the intel dual core 2GHz laptop. 2G ram.
programs with install apps work fine, but the vst custom folder does nothing!
