I've just gotta say ... Sonar 7!!

Just acquired it and i think its absolutely fantastic! so far so good anyway!

full sidechain support, completely free routing and bussing, all the included effects and VST's are really cool 2 (you get z3ta+ !!!) ...I must say that the GUI is one of the best ive seen and cakewalk is always great with MIDI stuff, this is the 1st time ive ventured into Sonar but imo its easily better than Cubase! Sum great new features such as AudioSnap make it great for dealing with and chopping loops/audio etc.. Give it a go!

What are you doing here then?

Really? I don't like the GUI at all... Live looks so much cleaner, imo.

Sonar's got a lot going for it, but this isn't one of them. Can you route a track directly into another track, without a bus? If so, then that's a new feature I hadn't heard about. If truly unlimited routing/bussing is desired, one should take a look at Reaper. But even Live will let you do routings that Sonar never would in the past at least...

Sonar is certainly a hugely impressive piece of software. But somehow... the overall user experience for me added up to LESS than the sum of its parts. On paper it's probably the best sequencer available today. in practice though I just found it uninspiring and I was unproductive using it.

Live is the antithesis of that - MORE than the sum of its parts, incredibly inspiring to use, and smooth to work with because everything is properly integrated (unlike in Sonar, where many of the best features appear to be add-ons and afterthoughts...).

maybe the poster is just impressed with all the features of sonar

Sonar 7 has a nice spec list. I have never liked Sonar's GUI personally, but I grew up on Cubase, so when you get familiar with one interface, it's hard to change to another (Live was an adjustment but a positive one as I have grown to love it's interface).

Most of the core functionaliy is available in other DAWS such as Logic and Cubase, there is very little to choose between them for basic functionality, plugins and bundled synths tends to be more of a deciding factor. Sonar is well stocked with these so is worth considering.

Well, for effects in particular. The Sonar effects are simply awesome.

Sonar is the bomb. Ableton Live is the bomb. Each for different reasons.

I love mixing and making the final product in Sonar. I love composing and arranging in Live. Now that Live has 64 bit summing, that may all change, but until Live 7 is released, I still have a need for Sonar. I haven't upgraded to Sonar 7 yet, but it does offer a lot of nice features. It's workflow is completely different than Live's. I started on Sonar, so for me, learning Live and getting use to it took some time. I love both programs.

For me, Sonar, Live, and Reason are a great package.

oh i know i've actually produced a bunch of pop rock records for people
using sonar 5 and 6..

i know it very well.

jamester what is the extent of reapers slicing/chopping abilities and thanks for the info?
