Hi all.
I have a lot of old mono clips that come in stereo unfortunately. I want to convert them to mono to save CPU power and reduce the size of sessions.

I tried stuff like sending it out as Mono via Utility and resampling but that won't do it. LIVE will just offer me internal stereo recording.

Is there a way within LIVE to do this other than using an outside wave-editior?

Ok.
Found out myself.
Its actually quite easy with the external editor.

For who ever is interested:

1. Right click on the audio clips' wave display - chose 'manage files' - click edit
on the file that is highlited. File will be opened with your Wave-Editor (if you
have chosen one in your Options Menue)

2. "Save as" Mono file.

3. click edit button again and - e voilà - file is automatically replaced.

Only problem with this is: You have to find out in which exact location the file is loacated. Because when you chose "Save as" your Editor will ask you: Where? And it will usually want to save in the last location where you had saved something. And that is mostly the wrong place.
So due to this trouble an internal LIVE solution would be helpful. But you can't have it all. And recording a mono signal in stereo usually makes no sense. i think the reason why i did that was because some plug-ins like reverb sound much broader when the signal is double-mono. Not LIVE effects though. Thank god!

Anyone know how to take a mono/single channel sample and make it a stereo/two channel sample?

Currently I am exporting samples to Soundforge and channel converting it there and importing it back in, Surely there must be a straightforward way to do this in Ableton?

Oh that is quite simple:

In arrangement view:

1. Insert a new audio track
2. Select "Resample" as INPUT, alternatively select as Input the track the mono clip is on. ARM the track.
3. Silence/mute all tracks except for the one with the mono clip.
4. Record

But actually should be no reason to do this since the internal LIVE routing is always stereo even if the clip is mono.

Hi, couldn't you just use the utility plugin on the track with its mono preset and force the track to mono?

Not if in the end you really want a mono clip in order to save CPUage (if recorded in 24bit this really makes a difference, at least on my machine). When set to 0% 'Utility' reduces any stereo signal to mono. But since its just an effect it in no way alters the clip.
You could also render the clip as mono and then replace the original with it. Hey why didn't i think of this before?

I think Im missing something here.

Ive plugged my bass guitar into the left channel of my soundcard. I arm the track and I only get a signal through the left side... i can only hear the bass through the left side.

I record and play back the recording and i only get the left side.

I have tried opening a new audio track, selecting Resampling, and recording but still only get the left side....I have also tried selecting the input track as the mono track. Still no luck...........

You need to select an individual channel as input.

You're (probably) inputting from soundcard input 1/2 or 3/4.
You should output to 1, 2, 3 or 4.

If you don't see individual mono inputs. Activate them in audio preferences.

Great. Problem fixed. Yeh... evidently i had input 1/2 selected. I have now selected 1 as input and Ableton stereo default routing has come into play.
