NEW TRACK ("Audi" Audio+Midi) read on...

:!: I often end up using two tracks per recording my external keyboards and modules. This is because I used a midi track to have the option of changing quantize, velocity, or maybe the patch entirely (ex: if i feel it should be a rhodes rather than piano). Then when I'm satisfied, I record it to an audio track, but still save the midi track for reference. I often minimize the midi tracks, but when I do several recordings, Live's session view looks a little cluttered.

 My proposal is a new type of track that aggregates audio and midi for this purpose. It should basically have both parameters while still having one record button with two light modes (green for recording midi/red for recording audio). Though it is not a critical feature as of yet, it will catch the attention of those who use outboard synths and modules. I really get tired of loading two tracks everytime. :)

You're telling me that users of outboard synths don't see this as beneficial? Are there any REAL productivity-driven producers in this community?

It could be cool, but I can't wrap my head around the concept yet. I have to think about it some more.

So would this be a two lane track - you open it up and you see one MIDI lane and one audio lane in one track? I'm assuming it would not be able to recognize audio and MIDI FX plugins coz it may get confusing, or maybe you're thinking of each MIDI and audio lane to be able to host their own plugin chains?

In a way it doesn't really make the experience that much different from what it is now. You still have to arm the track to record either audio or MIDI and you still have to switch between playback of audio and MIDI, and I'm pretty sure you still have to route the track to the correct inputs and outputs, so in a sense it's just like having two tracks - unless Ableton implements an "AuDI" track template where you can have a preset track routed the way you want it and ready to go.

Doesn't REAPER do this, or something similar? May have to look at it to see how that works.

I think what Ableton *REALLY* needs to implement is folder tracks

Hi,

Just to check: Have you looked at the External instrument, that you can put on a MIDI track: it sends MIDI to your hardware and receives audio from it. Freezing that track actually records the audio from the hardware to Live. If you want to save the MIDI clip, drag it to the Browser before/after freeze, for later use.

Or Am I missing something? (External Instrument is new in Live 7)

Regards,
Amaury

Agreed, this sounds like a job for External Instrument.
