pops and clicks when turning up the sends

I'm running an iBook G4 with added RAM to make 1.5 GB. I have the sample rate at about 400 which is getting a little too much latency for me. Everytime I turn up the effect sends quickly with my midi controller, I get a clicking noise that stops when I no longer adjust the knob. I have about 20 GB available on my HD, and I thought with the added RAM I would be sweet, however, the added RAM doesn't seem to have lowered the CPU percentage, and the clicking has got me wondering what's going on. If anyone has any comments about this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to put that extra RAM to better use, click the RAM button on some of your clips. That'll lower the workload on your HD and move it to RAM. It should help with stutters.. dont know about "clicking". Worth a try.

This "scratching/clicking" is actually occurring when I'm running a live track of a didgeridoo. I have 3 effects sends and it seems to occur while playing a live track and when I quickly turn up the send. It seems to me like a really basic project where I shouldn't find any troubles. Is there something specific that one needs to know about running live (not Live) tracks so that all runs smoothly?

What effects are on those sends?
3 instances of Reaktor, for instance, would kill all but the most robust laptop.
And what is your CPU percentage, anyway??
I am not surprised that adding RAM didn't lower the CPU percentage Live uses. Buying a faster CPU would do that. Possible a faster HD as well, but not so much RAM as I understand it.

CPU runs at about 40%. The interesting thing is that when I'm doing absolutely nothing with the project and it's just sitting there, CPU is at about 15%. Something that I haven't mentioned is that I was running the program from an external USB harddrive--I moved it back to the internal today and the CPU idled at next to nothing. Perhaps this was the problem. As a side query, is it common knowledge that programs should be run from the internal HD?
The effects are a ping pong delay, reverb, and flanger. I think that it's the reverb that is giving me grief.
