A PROBLEM THAT A FRIEND HAS -

IN THEIR WORDS:

" if anyone is familiar with Ableton Live software.... I accidentally saved over a session with a new song's session - but I want to retrieve the old history.... and yes - the sample files are still there but there are SO many and i'm lost as to what to do. Please write... if you know how to retrieve an old saved session."


ANY "HOW TO" HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED - IF THIS IS FIXABLE -

I'm not sure I understood it all correctly, what exactly did your friend do? I don't think I understand the "saved over a session with a new song's session". Do you think you could clarify?

Hmmmm, Sorry to say, at the moment, that quoted bit is all we have to go on.

As I'm not an Ableton user myself, I can't elucidate any further. Perhaps my friend will join the forum & further explain the problem. I've sent a note regarding this post to her.

Hopefully I'll hear back soon.

In the meantime (and the nicetime) - all thoughts & speculations are welcome!

In my limited experience in anything digital, lest one backs up ones work - oy!

For the record here, I did hear back from Ableton support (Kudos!) - And they had this to say :

"Hello,

if the file has been overwritten, there's no way to revert to the old
version, except she had the previous version saved under a different name.

ALSO - My friend with the problem had this to add :

"I got the same response - looks like I have my work cut out for me in re-creating the entire session
Ah well, at least i have a .wav (rendered) version of the song... "


SO, I suppose that's the end of the matter.


As a "grasping at straws" thought - mind you, I know NOTHING of working with Ableton Live (or any other software based recording) -

My pea-brain wonders : Is it possible to.....

1) Save the work - over-written as it stands.
2) Move the newer bits to another session
3) Deleat the newer bits from the session in question - hence leaving only the
original old session sample files "kinda sorta" in the current session - just
without the new sample files.

Would that help anything at all?

What you can do, if you want to spare yourself (or your friend) that kind of disaster, is to regularly make copies of the Set. Since each Set is stored in its own Project folder anyway, it is easy to store the copies in that same folder, thus grouping them together.

I usually make regular copies and name the copies with the date. That way I know when they were made, and if you put the year first and the day last, they also get sorted in the natural order. Ex: "Strawberry Fields Remixed 2007-11-13.als" (for today)
