i'm debating taking out a loan and getting an 8x3 gHz beast... i'm so sick of flattening and rendering and having to freeze massive and reaktor all the time.

I'm sure there are PLENTY of people on here that have one. It's my next purchase (see those Intel chips released today? = Bigger, badder Mac Pro's)

I have one - and it's practically impossible to make it hiccup. Even loaded up with instruments and effects, I can barely get the CPU to reach 30-40% (and that's out of 400% I believe). It's usually less.

When I got it I was debating between 2 x dual-core or 2 x quad-core. Those 2 x quad-cores are so damn expensive it's just not worth it. Before you decide to spend another $1500 on that, you should really look for some benchmarks showing how much of that theoretical power will actually be utilized by Live 7 on Leopard. (We need a new Live performance test thread!) I think it's primarily video apps that harness all that efficiently.

good point - unless software is optimized for it, the performance differentials are not usually as great as you would expect.

I have one and it's a really powerful machine. I have not compared it to any other similar computers though.

And we buy them to use them like drum machines instead of taking over foreign planets.

if you can wait at most a couple months, a new mac pro is due, possibly quad core all up and down the line, etc. if you need it now, you need it now, but at this point, if you don't, I'd say hold off a little longer.

I am using a 2*dual core 3ghz with 4gb ram
I had absolutely no problems with its performance
The last track we did, which had several au s, several audio channels, svereal midi channels, fx chains (a usual track) could go up to 28%
I tried to see how much I can push it, and even with needless enforcement I couldnt get to overload it, I got bored before that
Anyways it was good for me after using a 1ghz G4 for more than 5 years, and mind you I still use that for home computer stuff.
So I dont think I will be parting with this one before 7-8 years, it has nearly been a year already

What I've seen though, is that it gets noticeably slower when you work to a video track. Maybe not surprising, but I think it needs mentioning.

But new machines are always priced really high. The good news its that this should push down the price of older models, right?

This thread is timely...since I'm going self-employed, there's is no way I'm going to have all my business on the laptop I take out to perform, and no way I'm buying a winblows machine again...there's always bootcamp for self-inflicting pain. I'd imagine that even a 2x2.33GHz would keep me busy for years and years.

i wish Sylenth was for Mac though....
