i've been into video for awhile
, although audio work has been my focus for some time,
i see with software and increasingly powerful laptops
the possiblities of cross pollinization of forms

so...

please recommend an entry level, affordable yet
bang for buck value

vj software

Since you're on a Mac, Modul8 is very good, although I don't know how far you'll get with it on a G4.

i get up to 4 layers without an issue with modul8 on an old 1.33gig pwerbook.
i use live sequences and envelopes to trigger modul8...

cool.
thanks fellas.

i'll be upgrading to the macbook pro in january, so hopefully that will be powerful to drive increasing audio/ video needs.

will i need a dedicated hardware piece, for any of these programs, or will any midi device work.

thanks so far!

VDMX 5 (beta) ! www.vidvox.com
It looks very complicated at first sight, but you can built your own set and add as many plug-ins/effects/preview windows/layers/buttons+sliders etc. as you like. I own Arkaos, too, but Arkaos is stone age compared to VDMX... :P

Hi grainshifter and others, excuse the self advertising but Just Add Music (JAM) will cover all your a/v needs. JAM is the only a/v tool designed solely for ableton live. Design and developed with the help and guidance of the worlds leading a/v acts (addictive tv, eclectic method ect), JAM works straight out of the box with no complex setting up.

You use ableton just like you normally do! and automatically created stunning a/v content. We have bulit JAM for mac osx 10.4 / 10.5 to harness some incredible technology to get amazing speeds.

We are about to release a trail demo for people to try, but currently you can buy a working beta on our website which will be upgraded to the final version when released.

A friend of mine wrote Isadora
it's very very good if you like building your own customized VJ interface without too much hassle.

you can make your own effects and make you own interface all pretty easilly. Although it looks a little bit like a head-scratching MAX type interface, it is a lot easier than that. He actually wrote it for dancers to use, IE non-technical types in general.

Image
that's the construction mode, there is an 'interface' which you would actually use in performance. You can make your own interface exactly how you want it. There's a basic example with the demo

It's very, very flexible. But I guess it depends what your needs are.
I'm not really a VJ type, but I am turned off by the simplistic Archaos type interfaces "drag an effect onto a clip" . I prefer making stuff which is customised to my needs.

+1 for modul8

I've used it no worries on a 1.5Ghz PB and it rocks on a MBP

Arkaos is good but it really needs to be updated and over hauled but it works.

Get Union which comes with this controller that you can also use to control Live.

They really need to start paying me for promoting them on here.

have a look at mxwendler (http://www.mxwendler.net) as well, it runs largely on yer gpu so takes a fair amount of load off of the cpu. if you ask them nicely they're happy to have people beta test as well...
