I lost count of rock bands that have made that statement. It really needs to be changed to "we write rock music for people who can't dance so you can make fun of them".

What I've seen happen at rock shows is the farthest thing from dancing and instead ranges from bouncing and bobbing to random convulsions. Have I spent too much time in the Electronica scene and am being elitist about what I define as dance? Or do these bands need to spend some time in the Electronica scene to see what dancing really is?

Most of what I would consider good rock does not inspire one to dance. Maybe some bands think they are rock but in fact are funk. Also some definitive rock bands think they are funk just because their bass player slaps a string 6 times in one song.

Enter the great divider on this issue, the stripper or poll dancer. A great many of them choose rock songs for their sets but are they really dancing or roll playing an exaggerated partnerless sex scene? I hate that "bend over and jiggle the ass flab" move.

Where do we draw the line or define dance? And now a word from the rockers....

well i personally think that if you go to a rock show and no one can dance to the music (that includes the members or the band too) then that to me means the people trying to dance just don't know how to dance, not that the music is not danceable; and not to say every style of rock in danceable (but doesn't mean it could not be).

i've seen many DJs and electronic performers that look pretty dorky trying to dance to their music too.

Interesting that a lot of the psychedelic rock bands of the 60's were dance bands.

On a different note, I just saw Tool live, and it was pretty funny watching people headbanging to polymeter!

People need to fucking dance, man. People gotta shake it, move the body. How many people are getting enough sex? How many people get enough excercise? How many people get enough sex?

Wasn't dancing outlawed in Toledo, Ohio?

that's true. i'm glad that there's more dancing in rock music than before. or maybe there's alway been dancing in rock music but i never noticed...thanks to 10 years of boring shoegazing from my part

I also find it odd when people who produce or DJ dance music can't dance, but maybe that's along the same lines of people thinking it's odd I can play several instruments but am complete shit and tone deaf on vocals.

It also should be said that there are plenty of people who can't dance when there is dance music playing but at least they are given a fighting chance because the right kind of music is being played.

My favorite night of hilarity is going to a Hip Hop night populated by mostly white people who try to act like they are at a Dr. Dre house party. Actually, I find it funny when black people do that too so nevermind.

the difference is dead and phish fans don't think they can actually dance and they're too high to know the difference anyway. people at corporate parties think they are dancing machines.

I dunno if its still the same but a venue had to have some sort pf license to allow people to dance in it. There used to a late night bar in Birmingham UK, that the door men would come over and have a word if you were dancing and it was between 2 times, about 4am and 7am. Something to do with having a late license for booze but not for music?!!?. Something like that anyway. I guess its not the same any more with all the license changes that have happened over here in the last few years.

Funny though I would have loved to have seen someone start a debate of the definition of dancing with the door man.
